Front Line Leadership Module X – Managing Change

Front Line Leadership is a newly redesigned, flexible, ten module program that provides new and current supervisors and managers with a toolkit of practical communication and employee development tools that reduce conflict, improve employee performance, and enhance team effectiveness. The ten, four-hour modules can be offered in any combination. Each one targets a specific set of skills. This blog post is the seventh in a series of posts that explains each of these ten modules in greater detail. Click on the links below to learn more about the previous modules.

Module X – Managing Change is the tenth and final session of the Front Line Leadership Program. Change is inevitable, both in life and in the workplace. This module will equip the leaders in your workplace to communicate upcoming changes, understand how these changes will affect their team members, and deal with any resulting resistance.

The objectives of this module are:

  • Understand the impact of change on the workplace.  Changes can affect employee productivity, the level of trust employees have towards their teammates and manager, the level of loyalty employees have towards the company, and more. Participants will identify recent changes in their workplaces and discuss their impact. They will then take part in a simulation to better understand how and why these changes occur.
  • Understand why employees resist change. When change occurs, people go through the six states of change: shock, confusion, resistance, discouragement, adaptability, and integration. Therefore, resistance is, to some degree, an expected part of the change process. There are things however, that lead to greater levels of resistance, such as poor communication or the belief that the change is unnecessary. Participants will learn how to avoid the seven reasons people resist change and instead work towards seven reasons that people support change.
  • Learn the common reactions people have to change. Each of the six stages of change correlates with common reactions - both in feelings and in behavior. Managers will learn to identify and to expect these reactions.
  • Learn the roles and responsibilities of the Front Line leader during change. Participants in this module will not only be able to identify and expect reactions to change; they will also learn exactly what employees need in each of the six stages of change and what a good leader must do to meet those needs.
  • Learn skills for leading others during the change process. In addition to learning the roles and responsibilities of a leader during each of the six stages of change, participants will also be provided with a four-step action plan for communicating change to their employees. They will leave with an action plan for handling any impending changes in their organizations.
