Front Line Leadership Module IX – Managing Conflict

Front Line Leadership is a newly redesigned, flexible, ten module program that provides new and current supervisors and managers with a toolkit of practical communication and employee development tools that reduce conflict, improve employee performance, and enhance team effectiveness. The ten, four-hour modules can be offered in any combination. Each one targets a specific set of skills. This blog post is the seventh in a series of posts that explains each of these ten modules in greater detail. Click on the links below to learn more about the previous modules.

Module IX – Managing Conflict is the ninth session of the Front Line Leadership Program. Conflict is a normal part of all relationships, both professional and personal. Because the workplace is often a high-stress environment, the potential for conflict can be high. This module teaches managers how to identify behaviors that create conflict, helps them understand their own conflict style, and teaches them ways to discuss and resolve conflict with others. 

The objectives of this module are:

  • Explore the causes of conflict in the workplace.  Conflict is normal, but how it is expressed determines whether it is constructive or destructive. Unresolved conflict negatively affects the product, the team, and the organization. Participants will examine previous workplace conflicts, identify their causes, and use them as to better understand current and future conflicts to avoid negative consequences.
  • Explore the impact of DiSC on conflict approaches. Each of the four DiSC styles responds and communicates differently during conflict. By understanding how people with each of the four DiSC styles react both normally and when conflict arises, managers will better understand themselves and those on their team, enabling them to handle conflict more effectively.
  • Learn better ways to interact with those that have a different conflict style. The solution to navigating conflict with another often depends on his or her DiSC style. While being honest about feelings and thoughts might work with one person, taking responsibility may be more effective with another. In addition, supervisor behaviors that create a positive work environment will also be discussed. These behaviors, such as setting clear goals and tasks and treating employees fairly, will also eliminate unnecessary conflict.
  • Prepare for a conversation designed to resolve conflicts among two people. The ultimate goal of this module is to fully prepare managers for the conflicts that are sure to arise under their leadership. They will be given a ten-step one-on-one conflict tool that can be used to address any potential workplace issues with their employees. They will also receive extensive training on mediating conflict between two team members. They will then create a specific action plan for any current workplace situation to either address current issues or prevent future conflict.
